Squannacook Greenways is happy to announce that we won a $150,000 grant from MassTrails to study extending the Squannacook River Rail Trail in both directions! (See maps below) In addition to the $30,000 we received from the Groton Community Preservation Committee a few years ago, this will help us know if the trail can be extended. Some of the challenges include studying the two trestles' viability, environmental issues in the Groton extension, and two state highway crossings. This is a critical but still very preliminary step toward extending the trail to serve even more local residents.

We all at Squannacook Greenways were heartbroken at the loss of our long time president and close friend Steve Meehan. Without Steve's intelligence, charm, determination and humor, this rail trail would have faded long ago, instead of becoming something we all treasure. Every time we walk or ride this rail trail for years to come, Steve will be with us in our hearts. And check out our page of pictures of Steve that also lists those who donated to our cause in his memory.
